In a month that brings in so much darkness I am offering a little bit of light this week.
This past Saturday I heard this and it resonated with me so much that I thought I would share it with you. I am paraphrasing and adding in some of my own thoughts from the original message.
He (Jesus) replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
Matthew 17:20-21
Think about the mountain you are dealing with in your life right now. We all have them. Sometimes I think I have an entire range of them. Sooooo the thing about this scripture is when we read it we immediately put a time table on it. We imagine in our brains that the giant mountain in our life is INSTANTLY uproooted after years and years of formation. cracks, and crevices. We envision the mountain being moved with a snap of our fingersand get super frustrated when it doesn’t. And while mountains can move instantly sometimes, what I know is that most mountains move slow. So slow in fact that you can barely see them moving at all….but you can rest assurred…they are 🙂
When I read this scripture over and over again and start to process what I know to be true about my own mountains and what I know to be true about the word of God I see a couple different things:
1. You have to believe in your heart the mountain is moving.
This is completely different that knowing in your head or hoping that it will eventually and instantly move one day. If you have believed and prayed in the name of Jesus for the mountain to move from here to there then it WILL be moving… however slowly.
2. This life is about faith and endurance.
We MUST KEEP SPEAKING TO THE MOUNTAIN. Keep speaking to it. Keep walking. Keep believing in your heart. Endure no matter what. Life is hard and completely unfair sometimes. But if we keep speaking to the mountain and start to understand what faith and endurance really is then NOTHING will be impossible. This is your reward. Real faith keeps you going. Real faith means that you believe without a shadow of a doubt that God works ALL things together for the GOOD of those that love him, who have been called according to his purpose God is going to deliver. The timing is not for you to know.
3. ALL means ALL. NOTHING means NOTHING.
Sometimes I think we read the Bible with exception clauses in it. Again, it’s about believing what it says for every aspect of your life. When the bible says no it means no. All means all. Nothing means nothing. Whoever means whoever. There are no exceptions and no “yeah but ______”. Your life is no exception.
4. Faith is built through small mustard seed moments you may miss if your not paying attention.
Again, life is hard and we live in a world that is very broken. BUT there are minor miracles being played out all around us. There are small faith building moments happening every minute that if we are not diligent in seeing with spiritual eyes we may miss them. It could be small smile, belly hurting laughter, an apology, embrace, a phone call, a word of encouragement. We have to learn to seek small doses of refreshment to carry us through. Because speaking to a mountain for a long time can wear you out if you speak with no faith.
Find a mustard seed moment today to carry you through this week. Hold on to that one small thing…your mountain IS moving though you may not see it…..
